In 1969 and 1973, the Atomic Energy Commission detonated nuclear bombs deep underground in Western Colorado, to try and release natural gas.
These tests were part of Project Plowshare -- an initiative to use nuclear technology for peaceful uses.
The tests didn't go as planned, though....
